Microsoft Announces Halo Legends
by Cloud on Jul.24, 2009, under Anime, General News

Incredibly shocking news to many, but no, I’m not going blind and the Anime category is there on purpose.
Microsoft is indeed making a Halo anime DVD for release early next year, recruiting five Japanese animation studios: Production I.G., Toei Animation, BONES, Casio Entertainment, and Studio 4°C. It’s being made in the same vein as the Animatrix, or Batman: Gotham Knight.
You can see the trailer here at Gametrailers.
For one, I’m quite shocked. This was the last thing I would’ve ever expected Microsoft to do. I’ve personally never played a Halo game for more than a couple of matches when I’m with friends, and that’s merely because I’m bad at shooters and so I rarely buy/play them. But maybe this is Microsoft’s way of reaching out to guys like me.
Guys who… sit around playing Japanese RPGs all day, or who sit around watching anime all day. Maybe this is Microsoft’s way of opening their arms to anime fans all around. There’s no need to be afraid anymore. I think… I think this will be the bridge to unite anime fans and Halo fans, from all over.
Just kidding.
That said, it looks pretty cool from most of the little previews they gave for each animation studio. Toei Animation’s rendition of the Halo universe looks hilarious, so I’m looking forward to that. Production I.G.’s I’m also interested to see. Looks like they’ll be using a lot of their CG, and it looks like they’re going full-on anime route, judging by the characters shown. BONES’s seems kinda interesting, with their whole Master Chief mecha suit things. Casio Entertainment’s full-on CG thing they’ve got going on looks pretty sweet as well.
Then again, I know almost nothing about the Halo story, so I could be bored stiff, or I could be pissed, or anything can happen, really. All I know is going to happen, is that the Toei animation one is gonna be funny. Most likely hilariously bad kind of funny, which is good for me.
I don’t know. Halo fans seem to be crying, but I find it kinda cool. Microsoft definitely seems pretty serious about this, so I’m going to expect some good things to come out of it.

I see several reasons this will be quite unpopular:
1. Weeaboos won’t like it cuz it’s Western-influenced and thus won’t be in LOL SUBS but in EW DUBZ!!! And English dubs totally SUX GUISE!
2. People don’t like Halo fanboys and thus bash Halo
3. Halo is sucky and overrated. …Wait. FFFFFFUUU-
4. Meanwhile Halo fanboys who hate JRPGs (makes sense) won’t like it either
5. Did I mention weaboos won’t like it because weeaboos despise things that aren’t exotic and foreign and kawaii desu ne?
Personally I’m looking forward to it because it combines (hopefully) Western writers with Japanese animation, the best of both worlds. On the contrary, it could just be Microsoft milking Halo for the cash cow franchise that it is and it’ll just blow everything but the profit. …Dammit I knew I was forgetting somethng!
6. ???
7. PROFIT!!!
Finally I would like to say that I am a sucker for some good science fiction action that anime (and just about every visual medium) lacks and this one seems right up my alley. Hopefully it’ll satisfy that part of me quite nicely, but we’ll see.

I’m actually torn between which group has better writers. One the one hand, Americans have no lack for great scriptwriters except they don’t work on animation unless you count Pixar. As a result, I’d be tempted to say Japanese writers are better, except that all the crap anime I’ve seen has had that thrown in its face. American animation though is mostly evenly-matched as far as Japan is concerned.
As for the post content (lol tangent) I’m not quite sure what to think of it. The CG and the animation look horribly out of place and there’s not much left after you take out the dazzling graphics since there’s not much in the way of story. I suppose the worst it can do is copy something shitty like Transformers 2, but somehow, I don’t think it’ll be that bad.

In all seriousness, PoS on its way.
