Needless Ep. 4 – A Lolicon Emerges?!?

Fourth episode of Needless. Sucks to say, there’s still about 9 more to go. However, episode 4 actually proved to have a great deal of entertainment compared to the others since it focused on character development more than the others have. There was petty much no real action worth mentioning, but the story did progress a bit in a way that they should’ve gone with in episode 3 originally. Let’s get down to it now, shall we?!

Summary:

The episode opens up with a first-person view in a lab tube, complete with green goo and scientists. The scientists are running tests on the person in the tube until they notice that something is wrong with his right eye and heart and everyone starts flipping out. However, their attention is quickly diverted to another test subject. The failed test subject then screams and we see its ugly face, and Adam Arclight awakens from his dream. You know, this all reminds of that scene in Final Fantasy VII where Sephiroth discovers that the Nibelheim reactor actually houses humans infused with Mako. This just in: Arclight is a Sephiroth clone.

Arclight's rape face. No, I'm not kidding.

We’re back to our heroes, and Momiji explains why he thought Blade was originally Arclight, besides just the name similarity. He tells the group that he heard Arclight had a large body, and a hairstyle that matched his attitude, as well as a large choker around his neck; all of which are things that both Blade and Arclight have in common. With this, the group concludes that they need more information.

Meanwhile, it turns out Arclight’s body isn’t working all too well, and he requires a new one. So, his information sources alert him of Blade, who he requests to have captured, forgetting that he had a bounty set on Blade’s head. To remedy this, he tells Saten, the man who we’ve been seeing watching over our heroes for the past couple of episodes, to stop his pursuit of Blade, but asks him if he knows of his whereabouts. Saten lies, and tells Arclight he doesn’t know. Riru, the purple-haired woman with gigantic boobs, comments on how Arclight’s men are worthless, noting how Uten and Kafka have already been defeated. With this, she sends our her own special force, the Girl Brigade, to track down Blade.

I figured I might as well take a picture of the one interesting thing Arclight's scenes produced.

Our heroes are next seen searching around the sewers for a way to get more infomation, with Momiji leading the way. He happens to know a way to contact someone in secret named Disk. Momiji shows the gang a secret computer that allows anyone to speak to Disk and ask for information, but Disk tells the group that he can’t simply hand that information out to anyone, and tells the group to head to Iron Mountain, located in Black Spot, and they head on over.

Momiji is actually the group's computer wizard.

On the way to the long, arduous path to Iron Mountain, Eve mentions a weakness that Blade has to Cruz, even though it seems he has none, but doesn’t exactly tell Cruz what it is. Later, the group manages to encounter a lone girl in pink (it’s one of our lesbians!) running away from a group of men in a scene that just fuels doujinshi artists (Don’t worry, I’ll be the lookout for anything juicy). Cruz asks Blade to help the girl, and surprisingly, he does. Momiji questions this, and Eve reveals Blade’s weakness.

Little girls.

After the girl has been saved, she tells the group her name, Mio. However, it’s a bit suspicious that a girl like her was wandering around Black Spot, and the group inquires about this, but Blade isn’t too fond of people questioning his rape subjects and stops them from questioning any further. Mio claims to have amnesia, and Blade decides this isn’t suspicious in the slightest sense of the word, and takes her along for the ride (Hohohoho).

Blade's such an honorable, respectable man.

Blade's such an honorable, respectable man. I want to be just like him.

Eventually, our group makes it to Iron Mountain and enters. However, it seems the place is crawling with Testaments, and Blade, Eve, and Momji kick into action. After a wee bit of fighting, the group ends up meeting Disk, who is actually also a little girl, albeit 1000 years old apparently. Blade is, of course, turned on by this (especially the fact that she appears to be underage) but Disk comments on Blade being one of the failed creations of the Adam Project, which was a human experiment, and now it’s safe to assume to that Blade is also a Sephiroth clone. Goddammit. He’s also probably the experiment that was a success. … Zack is Blade and Arclight is Cloud, dear god it’s all coming together now.

Sorry, sorry. I’m done. Really.

Anyways, the scene cuts to outside Iron Mountain, where we see two ominous girls discussing how the group is easily trapped in Iron Mountain. It’s clear to us now that our lesbian ED girls is actually the Girl Brigade, and Mio is a lying loli-slut. Goddamn her. I also feel the need to mention that the mute blonde girl is moe. That is all.

D'aw. The blonde one can't speak. That's actually really adorable.

Thoughts:

The episode was nothing spectacular, but it did offer quite a bit of entertainment compared to the other episodes. Blade’s new quirk has finally made him a character worth paying attention to, instead of one that just bores me, and he was definitely the last person I was expecting to be a lolicon. Maybe the ED is just a large collaboration of Blade’s perverted thoughts…? Not that that amends the fact that the ED is terrible. And I’m definitely not just approving of the whole lolicon thing just because I’m known to have similar tastes. Nope.

Momiji also proves to continue to be amusing. Unlike Cruz, he actually stands up to Eve and Blade’s insults so far (though, I can see him giving up on this). He also fights, and offers quite a bit of comedic relief with his stupidity. Why can’t Momiji just take Cruz’s place? He pretty much has the same role, minus the slave factor and he’s not completely worthless. =( I hate Cruz so much.

I like this shot simply because it just goes so well with the above paragraph.

However, Cruz and Eve still show room for improvement. Eve really didn’t have much time to do anything this episode, and Cruz is still absolutely worthless, like I mentioned above. Though, Eve did show her more serious and mellowed out side again this episode, which is nice. Her usual antics tend to get on my nerves. I can understand that she’s mainly comic relief, but I’m honestly not a fan of characters that are trying to be funny by being completely irritating. Eve is normally just a giant bitch most of the time, and I’m sad to say I can’t see that changing.

I’ve come to the realization that alone, the characters in this show tend to leave much to be desired, but together they can manage to string together some amusing conversations and offer quite a bit of comedy that makes Needless much more tolerable. With newer characters pouring in, I hope this continues to be the case.

I'm glad that only works in Japan.

I was also a bit interested in the storyline this time, unlike last episode. While I think it’s a bit stupid, the whole Adam Project thing does interest me a bit, and I’m curious to see what’ll happen with the Girl Brigade. Things are finally starting to get moving, and that’s all nice and dandy, and I can only hope that it continues down this road.

Overall, Episode 4 has managed to not only make me enjoy character interaction, but has also started to work up some semi-interesting plot points. Provided the action gets more intense and manages to put me on the edge of my seat, I think Needless might actually prove to be worth all the pain I endured in the past three episodes. Only time will tell…!
